The Origin of HeroCon

Three years ago, a young boy in the local community entered the foster care system. A dedicated group of mentors, including the future founders of Bettered, Not Broken, saw firsthand how a love for comic books provided this child a rare sense of escape and identity. That pivotal moment sparked a realization that shifted the group’s focus forever.

We recognized that at-risk youth needed more than just verbal encouragement; they needed tangible symbols of hope. They began a grassroots effort to collect comic books, inviting people across the Dallas-Fort Worth area to sign them with personal messages of courage. These comics were transformed into powerful tools of support and delivered directly to youth navigating their darkest moments.

What started as a simple act of kindness by a few individuals has grown into a community movement. Each year, the organization reaches a new group of youth, utilizing the universal power of superhero stories and mental health education to spark life-changing conversations.

Now, in 2026, the mission takes its most ambitious leap forward with the inaugural HeroCon. This conference is designed to inspire thousands through the creative languages of art and media, proving that anyone can overcome their circumstances.

To make this vision a reality, the team is seeking partners. Sponsorship serves as the heroic support needed to empower the next generation to rise strong, believe in their potential, and become the heroes of their own stories.
